STARTING SEEDS - ESPECIALLY EDIBLES.
general 'what to know' in seven points
1. SEED QUALITY is important: freshness and germination rate are the
two basics. Quality seeds sprout better, and stay better preserved when
not planted in that away, because most of the week seeds were removed before packaging.
2. Healthy seeds mean better plants. Some seed companies offer seed with germination or sprouting rates as low as one of
1 out of 4. Good quality seed companies will be sure to deliver better
germination rates and stronger varieties. Consider how this may have affected your success in the past!
3. Seeds do have a depth in the soil where they are most happily
planted. Good information is another reason to use a high quality seed company: details on the package will be accurate and written clearly to improve your success.
4. Seeds will often require very bright light for germination. If you see
seedlings becoming very tall or elongated, they are probably reaching
for light. Give stronger light to avoid weak young plants.
5. Seeds do like to a consistent but light moisture level. Plastic domes
to retain moisture over seedlings can be very helpful in New Mexico
where 12% humidity is not unusual. Gardeners'Guild has a unique, tall
dome available to support larger seedlings in trays.
6. Some seeds do not like to be transplanted, and some can be tough to
sprout. With a favorite plant, it is worth the extra effort to grow
from seed. A certain amount of experimenting will improve results.
7. Experimenting by planting from seed is the best way to learn and improve. Above are guidelines to get you started!
