the path to enlightenment is mulched.

  • Mulching shades the soil which keeps it soft
  • Mulching reduces evaporation
  • Mulching discourages weeds
  • Mulching encourages earthworm activity
  • Mulching adds a design element wth minimal expense

choose what is best for you!

To make choice for your situation, identify the issues. Gardeners'Guild helps trowelers to prioritize their needs based on the following five concerns: time frame, budget, appearance, maintenance requirements and sustainability. Rank these five criteria in considering your current project, or long term plan.

then consider mulching as a step in your particular plan: why where when and what to use.
Mulching saves time, energy and the environment with a modest investment.

A few basics...
Mulch is quick to lay, especially lighter weight varieties. Mulch does not have to be expensive. If you have a truck, avoid the delivery fee and pick up the materials yourself! 1 cubic yard covers 100 square feet to the appropriate depth of 3". Many mulches are very reasonably prices, like compost, recycled newspaper or a decorative option like pecan shells.

MOST IMPORTANTLY, a practice called 'sheet mulching' can actually repair the seemingly un-savable soils in Albuquerque. Commonly implemented in permaculture designs, it is a simple and sustainable method that results in great benefits at a small cost to you and the ecology.
P.S. Earth worms love pecan shells!
