choose what is best for you!
To make choice for your situation, identify the issues. Gardeners'Guild helps trowelers to prioritize their needs based on the following five concerns: time frame, budget, appearance, maintenance requirements and sustainability. Rank these five criteria in considering your current project, or long term plan.
then consider mulching as a step in your particular plan: why where when and what to use.
Mulching saves time, energy and the environment with a modest investment.
A few basics...
Mulch is quick to lay, especially lighter weight varieties. Mulch does not have to be expensive. If you have a truck, avoid the delivery fee and pick up the materials yourself! 1 cubic yard covers 100 square feet to the appropriate depth of 3". Many mulches are very reasonably prices, like compost, recycled newspaper or a decorative option like pecan shells.
MOST IMPORTANTLY
, a practice called
'sheet mulching'
can actually repair the seemingly un-savable soils in Albuquerque. Commonly implemented in permaculture designs, it is a simple and sustainable method that results in great benefits at a small cost to you and the ecology.
P.S. Earth worms love pecan shells!
