Looking for simple educational materials to get growing? FREE?
TimeLife books from the 70's offer some of the best information available: basic principles blended with common sense without an addiction to chemicals. And the GardenersGuild library has extra copies!

    Topics available are as follows:
Pruning and Grafting, Bulbs, Flowering Houseplants, Evergreens, Perennials, Easy Gardens, Wildflower Gardening and Gardening Under Lights.

While these texts aren't oriented exclusively towards our conditions, they offer an excellent overview and tips that would be true in all environments.
EMAIL if your gardening group can put these books to use!

    Hi!

I have a source for goat bedding/poo, but could use additional sources as I am reclaiming an entire acre of land from blow sand.

I've read that both llama and alpaca "gold" is also non-burning and a ready source of fertilizer and if straw bedding or hay is in the mix, all the better!  I wouldn't mind a source of chicken or rabbit poo either.  The more the merrier.

I am willing to do the loading (unless you want to visit) myself, all I need is your permission, directions and a time that works for both of us!

I would like the sources of this fertilizer to be healthy animals and not to be of the heavily medicated kind, please.

Let me know if you need someone to dispose of your bounty.

You can e-mail me at gothicmuse2@yahoo.com

Hi, Cyndi. A number of members do have chickens and this summer, gardeners'guild hopes to collect the urban herders together for classes and materials swap. Your request is one we can handle! First I will mention it in the newsletter this week.
    Then...
Due to the increased interest, GG will pick up the pace a little in organizing activities. If you are in a time crunch to find extra hen-produced fertilizer, you could try to contact the folks at urbanchickens.org. They might have a handy supply for you.

Check back here in a few days. Thanks! GG Hq

    Hi All,

Does anybody out ther have any chickens? I sure could use some chicken ___ to heat up my compost pile.

Also, if anyone needs leaves to get their compost pile going, we have lots!!

Go to a rural area where people ranch cattle. There's a feed suppliment they use that comes in a big, maybe 10 gal. container. Out here, people were throwing them in the dump, until Denise, a Mennonite woman, started gathering them for her garden. She barely plants anything in the ground. She has almost an ACRE of these containers on her place!

Also, take an old tire or 2. Line it with a 20 lb. animal feed sack (even dog and cat kibble). Put gravel in bottom for drainage; add soil; plant. If you paint the tires white, they're not so unsightly AND they reflect sunlight that could, otherwise, cook your plants.

Great composting or mulching material, Gardeners'Guild has about 8 or 10 bags (Nob Hill area). They will not go into the dump, but if anyone might need some, we have plenty! Comes bagged in biodegradable material, as a bonus.

Hunting for New Zealand Spinach in January, even though it's usually a warm-weather substitute for standard spinach varieties.  Need it for a medically restircted diet that disallows all other greens, including lettuce, collards, chard, etc.  If you have any seedlings that are wintering over, or a larger surviving plant you would be willing to part with, please let me know.  The co-op's supplier does not have this in winter.  Any leads greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

Members, you can now compost your kitchen waste and soft yard waste at the GG HQ. From 10am to noon, drop your soon-to-be-compost in the Soilutions bin, by the garden (alley) entrance for your convenience, or any time during public hours. Soilutions has begun collecting/recycling food waste from a number of the local restaurants, and from Gardeners'Guild too. There is a small charge for this service, but it is well worth getting involved by making the trip. Remember, fall clean-up will be here soon...
