DECORATIVE ROCK.
BE CAUTIOUS WHEN ROCK HUNTING!
New Mexico cultivates lovers of rock and dramatic formations. The southwest
desert, with distinctive rock sculptures, inspires a unique kind of artistry
using inorganic elements to echo a native landscape.
In such an extreme environment, the challenge to create a garden that looks
natural requires careful use of rock. There are no rules to design though,
if you find interesting rocks when exploring New Mexico, there may be restrictions about removal. If the seek-n-find approach suits you, a number of small, resident-friendly rock yards exist on and around Edith NW, north from Montano.
If rock hunting isn't your thing, go to Buildology for a full range of rock
mulches. Lots of colors and sizes with a wonderfully convenient display in
front.
For decorative rocks that will act as focal points (boulders, etc.) Rocky
Mountain Stone is the most accessible resource. They can also help in creating
a fountain or other features with their diamond-bit drills. Very impressive!
Be cautious when rock-hunting 'in the wild'. This is highly illegal in some places and completely acceptable in others. The important thing is to find out first.
